“We Appear to Have Another Opportunity”

The Principal and Deputy-Principal, at the school where I taught, were two remarkable men. They were both highly intelligent and demonstrated the real meaning of being life-long learners. They “walked the talk” professionally and personally.

Both studied and researched constantly about new and best practices in relation to education. They were forever looking for new content and how best to deliver this to the students. They were always keen to increase their skills and that of the teaching staff. This made it a very stimulating and exciting place to work. We, the teachers, were always learning too.

In addition, these two men were constantly studying and pursuing their own interests such as math, science, history, Latin, humanities, art and sculpture; the list seemed to be endless. They were also interested in outdoor and physical pursuits such as hiking, rock climbing or dancing. They would always relate some fascinating book or article they had read or something they had done in their spare time. These two leaders were open and looking for new and creative approaches to things. If any staff member, either teaching or non-teaching, any student or parent ever told them of something they were learning or doing, they were always keen to hear about it.

These two men clearly demonstrated an open-minded zest to learn and grow, which permeated the whole organization. Learning was exciting and “cool” for the students, so they were all fully engaged. Certainly, as an adult, I was kept on my toes by their positive attitude and the positive challenges they presented to us!

Rather than focusing on problems, the Principal and Deputy-Principal both had resolved to create and foster an organization that was solutions-oriented. When issues arose at the School, the Principal and Deputy consciously resolved to see them not as problems but as opportunities. This gave them the space to see the issue, whatever it was, as an opportunity to discover a mutually beneficial resolution for all. It was even important to them to avoid using the word “problem.”
